"Light is the key...I
want to catch the moments when the sky is getting dark, when the sun is setting or rising, or the storm moves in across a broody skyline."
If you love a particular place, person or subject, and take a
photographic essay of that, then that passion should come across to those viewing your work.
It could be the inspiration from Irish music that gives Mikes pictures that "lonesome touch".
"Many
people have told me that my images invoke a loneliness...a melancholy...
- I find this quite liberating as when I look through the lens I really
feel at that point that its just me with what I see that matters. Some
of the images around the Burren and West of Ireland do have a splendid
isolation....these are very often places I feel a sense of peace and
calm - places where forbidding rocks and seascapes dominate. Being able
to capture the Atlantic skies over such incredible and ancient terrain
links me to my past and present in one breath."
